Mark Woods, an assistant boys basketball coach at Suitland, has been named new basketball coach at the school, Suitland Athletic Director Bernarr Battle said yesterday. This is the first varsity head coaching position for Woods.

Woods, 30, spent the past two seasons as an assistant and junior varsity coach at Suitland. Previously, he was an assistant coach at Gwynn Park for four seasons. He is a special education teacher at the Regional Institute for Children and Adolescents.

"He has the intellect and the commitment to do the job," Battle said. "We're looking to develop a program, not just a basketball team."

Former coach Eric Jeter's contract was not renewed after the Rams went 3-20 last season.

"I'm excited and thankful for the opportunity to coach in the county," Woods said. "I'm looking for this to be an experience for me and the kids."
