It was the site of Elvis Presley's last concert in 1977 and Michael Jordan's 1995 return from retirement. Circuses, rock concerts, religious crusades and, of course, lots of basketball marked the 25-year history of Market Square Arena.

Last night, the Pacers played their final game there, a 97-65 preseason win over the Jazz. They will move into the new Conseco Fieldhouse for the start of the season. The new, 18,500-seat fieldhouse, four blocks south of Market Square in downtown Indianapolis, will be inaugurated Nov. 6 with the Pacers' home opener against the Celtics.

* TRENT INJURED: Mavericks F Gary Trent will miss two to four weeks with a torn left hamstring, an injury suffered in the final minute of a 95-93 exhibition win Thursday over the Raptors.

* BARKLEY TO RETIRE?: Rockets F Charles Barkley said he will announce his retirement Sunday, effective at season's end. The 36-year-old Barkley has threatened several times in recent years to retire, but insisted this time he means it.

* THE DEAL ON DELE: The Pistons are thinking about placing C Bison Dele, who filed retirement papers with the NBA office, on the suspended list rather than the retirement list, a team spokesman said. If he is placed on the suspended list, the Pistons could reinstate him if he changes his mind--or trade him.
