The amateur owner jumper course at the Washington International Horse Show proved to be harder than it looked last night. Only four of 25 horses made it to the jump-off at US Airways Arena. Set at 4 feet 6 inches with five-foot spreads, the 13 jumps took their toll on competitors.

Among the four to make it to the second round was True Grit, ridden by Wendy Chapot. The pair has successfully won this class three times in the past four years and was coming off a victory Sunday night.

But they weren't fast enough to beat Wichita and Kristen Monchik, 26, who is in her first year at the higher jumper courses. The Greenwich, Conn., native said she was surprised how tough the course turned out to be.

"I was a little shocked," Monchik said. "I was really nervous because this is the first year doing the highs. I was worried about the combinations, but they rode great."

Of her 10-year-old Bavarian warmblood, Monchik said: "She is pretty careful, really scopey and not the easiest to ride, but very willing."

True Grit and Chapot settled for second, with Maxwell and Matthew Perlman third. Serengeti and Tanya Scherfenberg were fourth.

Earlier in the day, Blythe Masters completed a flawless round on Global Advisor's Bouncer in the $10,000 Marshall & Sterling Amateur Adult Jumper final. Tiffany Hammock rode her American quarter horse Pay The Rose to victory in the $10,000 Marshall & Sterling Children's Jumper final.
