Raiders QB Rich Gannon broke a bone in his left wrist while being knocked to the ground after throwing the deciding touchdown pass in a 24-23 victory over the Jets.

RB Tyrone Wheatley, who was taken off the field on a cart after injuring his lower back in the third quarter of Sunday's game, remained in a hospital yesterday for further tests. Raiders Coach Jon Gruden said tests so far have shown no serious damage to Wheatley's back.

If Gannon can't play, Gruden said Bobby Hoying will start.

DILFER REPLACED: Coach Tony Dungy benched QB Trent Dilfer as Tampa Bay's starter and chose Eric Zeier as the "long-term" replacement. The move came a day after the Buccaneers (3-3) sputtered offensively in a 6-3 victory over the Bears.

MIMS CHARGED: Chargers DE Chris Mims was charged with four misdemeanors in an alleged attack on a man outside a fast food restaurant last month. The San Diego City Attorney's office charged Mims with assault with a deadly weapon, battery, petty theft and urinating in public. His arraignment was set for Nov. 19. . . . Chargers RB Natrone Means underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee and will be lost for two to four weeks.

MARINO AND YOUNG UPDATES: QB Dan Marino's arm strength is improving, but his availability this week because of bone spurs in his neck is uncertain pending a visit with a specialist in Los Angeles, Dolphins Coach Jimmy Johnson said. . . . 49ers QB Steve Young plans to seek at least one more medical opinion about his concussion problems this week amid more signs that his season and possibly his career are over.

BILLS SAFETY OUT: Bills S Manny Martin may miss the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury in Sunday's game.
