Maryland junior F Terence Morris heads up the 1999-2000 all-Atlantic Coast Conference men's basketball preseason team as voted on by media at the league's 38th annual Operation Basketball in Greensboro, N.C.

The 6-foot-9 Morris, who averaged 15.4 points and 7.1 rebounds last season for the Terrapins, received 87 of a possible 89 votes in ballot results released yesterday. He is joined on the first team by North Carolina senior Ed Cota, Wake Forest junior Robert O'Kelley, Duke junior Shane Battier and Georgia Tech senior Jason Collier.

Duke's Jason Williams led all balloting for the preseason rookie of the year with 47 votes. . . .

Maryland DE Erwyn Lyght, who suffered stretched ligaments in his neck shortly before halftime of the North Carolina game Saturday and was taken by helicopter to a hospital for precautionary X-rays, participated in practice yesterday but not in any contact drills. His status for the Duke game Saturday at Byrd Stadium is "day-to-day," according to Terrapins Coach Ron Vanderlinden. . . .

Maryland junior RB LaMont Jordan and senior G Jamie Wu were named ACC offensive back and lineman of the week for their contributions in the Terrapins' 45-7 victory over North Carolina.

CLEAVES OUT: Michigan State G Mateen Cleaves, the only returning first-team all-American from last season, suffered a stress fracture in his right foot and will be out eight to 10 weeks, Coach Tom Izzo announced.

EXTRA POINTS: Alabama RB Shaun Alexander and QB Andrew Zow were both listed as doubtful to play against No. 20 Southern Mississippi this weekend. . . .

Tulsa fired longtime football coach Dave Rader and made defensive coordinator Pat Henderson his interim replacement. Rader, whose team fell to 1-6 with a loss on Saturday to Hawaii, had coached at Tulsa for 12 years and had a 49-80-1 record.
