Lake Braddock, the No. 1-ranked field hockey team in the area and four-time defending Virginia AAA Northern Region champion, was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the regional tournament by Jefferson, 2-1, last night.

Jefferson, which improved to 13-3, advanced to play West Potomac in the semifinal at 7 tonight at Oakton, where the entire tournament is being played. No. 3 Centreville will play Oakton in the other semifinal at the same time on a different field.

Lake Braddock (13-1-2) was attempting to win its seventh region title this decade. The Bruins have been in the state championship game four times during the 1990s, including the previous two years, although they've never won the title.

"It's been a lot of pressure to live up to that every year," Bruins Coach Diane Miller said. "I told the team, especially the seniors, 'You've accomplished something unprecedented. You've been part of a four-time region champion.' "

Rebecca Rendall's goal with 6 minute 18 seconds remaining was the game-winner for the Colonials. Jefferson's Ginger Leonard scored the game's first goal 10 minutes into the first half. Lake Braddock's Tracy Fitzgerald evened the score just over 15 minutes into the second half.

"What can I say? They outplayed us," Miller said.
