Gywnn Park's boys soccer team defeated Southern of Anne Arundel County, 2-1, yesterday in a shootout following two scoreless overtime periods in a Maryland 2A South quarterfinal in Brandywine. The Yellow Jackets (10-6) were led by senior Ricky Harris, who scored with less than one minute left in regulation to force overtime and then scored the deciding goal in the shootout. . . .
Oxon Hill (5-7-1) pulled an upset yesterday in the Maryland 4A South quarterfinals, defeating visiting Northwestern, 4-1, behind two goals from Dodi Sunjaya. The Clippers (5-7-1) will play at Largo in a semifinal on Thursday. Northwestern finishes 10-3-1.
"I don't think any kids on the team had ever won a playoff game," said first-year coach Brad Beckman, whose team avenged a 3-1 loss to Northwestern this season. . . .
Bell Multicultural (6-1 overall and league) defeated Wilson, 1-0, in a D.C. Interscholastic Athletic Association game last week to become the first league team to defeat--and score on--the Tigers this season. Wilson and Bell have combined to win every DCIAA title since 1989, though Wilson has won the past five. Bell's victory avenged a 5-0 loss to the Tigers (8-8, 8-1) on Oct. 6. . . .
