Maryland WR Jason Hatala suffered a broken pinkie finger on his right hand during practice, and Coach Ron Vanderlinden said he will miss Saturday's game against North Carolina State.

Hatala suffered the injury when he fell after failing to make an off-balance catch late in Tuesday's practice. He had the finger taped and finished practice. An X-ray showed what Vanderlinden described as a "bad break," and Hatala missed yesterday's workout.

The 5-foot-10 junior (Centreville) has averaged 22.7 yards on 11 catches, has run four reverses for 24 yards and returned one punt for 29 yards. He has scored two touchdowns.

PATRIOTS FALL: Denise Schromm scored in the 94th minute to give fifth-seeded UNC Wilmington a 3-2 win over fourth-seeded George Mason yesterday in the quarterfinals of the Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer tournament in Virginia Beach. Caroline Kent (Woodbridge) and Katy Robertson scored for the Patriots. . . . Fifth-seeded Georgetown (9-8, 6-5) will face fourth-seeded St. John's (11-4-3, 6-2-3) in the first round of the Big East men's soccer tournament at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Uniondale, N.Y.

DAVIS TO GW: Shawn Davis, a 6-7, 230-pound forward at Booker T. Washington High School in Memphis, has committed orally to play basketball for George Washington, according to Fred Horton, Davis's coach.
