With starting QB Dan Ellis not completely recovered from a concussion, Virginia Coach George Welsh yesterday named junior David Rivers his starting quarterback for Saturday's game against No. 7 Georgia Tech. Welsh said Ellis, who was injured last weekend against No. 1 Florida State, could appear in a backup role. Rivers (pronounced RYE-vers) completed 4 of 11 passes for 32 yards with one interception against the Seminoles after Ellis left the game at the end of the first half.
* WOMEN'S SOCCER: Sarah Gustafson and Jackie Mynarski each scored as second seed Maryland defeated seventh seed Duke in the ACC tournament quarterfinals, 2-1, in Chapel Hill, N.C., and fifth seed Virginia lost to No. 4 seed Clemson, 3-1. . . . The Howard women lost to Liberty, 4-1, in the opening round of the Big South tournament in Lynchburg, Va.
* FIELD HOCKEY: Meredith Elwell and Jessica Coleman scored for fourth seed Virginia in a 2-0 win over fifth seed Duke in the ACC tournament play-in game in Winston-Salem, N.C.
* BASKETBALL: G Amy Wetzel scored 17 points and F Tere Williams had 10 points and 11 rebounds as the Hokies defeated visiting Budapest, 63-58, in an exhibition. . . . The Virginia men, led by Donald Hand's 16 points and Colin Ducharme's 14 rebounds, defeated visiting Down Under, 97-67.
