The best and worst from yesterday's games:

Roberts Rushes For NCAA-Best 409 Yards

RB Charles Roberts rushed for 409 yards and five touchdowns to lead Sacramento State past Idaho State, 41-20, setting an NCAA record for a single-game rushing performance.

Roberts eclipsed the previous NCAA Division I-A record set by Kansas running back Tony Sands, who rushed for 396 yards against Missouri in 1991; the Division I-AA record of Siena running back Reggie Greene, who gained 379 yards against St. John's in 1996; and the Division II record of Fairmont State running back Rob Davidson, who rushed for 403 yards versus Concord last year.

Roberts said he was inspired by Walter Payton, the leading rusher in NFL history who died Monday of bile duct cancer at the age of 45.

"I wanted to try and come out and run hard like he ran," Roberts said.

More Record Breakers

Miami of Ohio RB Travis Prentice scored three times to break Ricky Williams's Division I-A records for points and touchdowns, and rushed for a school-record 376 yards in a 32-23 victory over Akron. Prentice scored on runs of 75, 2 and 72 yards to give him 76 career touchdowns, one more than Williams had for Texas. Prentice has scored 456 points, surpassing Williams's total by four. ...

Nevada senior WR Trevor Insley caught 14 passes for 254 yards in a 42-33 loss to Idaho to become the Division I-A career leader in receiving yards with 4,660. ...

Louisiana Tech QB Tim Rattay threw for 383 yards and six touchdowns in a 58-17 rout of Louisiana-Monroe. Rattay, his backup and two Louisiana-Monroe quarterbacks threw 91 passes and completed 61. Rattay, who was 35 of 48, has 955 career completions -- 52 behind the NCAA record holder, Louisville's Chris Redman.

ABC Cameraman

Target of Gunshots

The ex-wife of an ABC cameraman allegedly pulled a gun and fired two shots at him inside Purdue's Ross-Ade Stadium several hours before Purdue's game with Wisconsin yesterday, authorities said. Samuel Tamez, 42, a freelance cameraman, was not injured.

Tamez wrestled the woman, Terry M. Tamez, 37, of San Antonio, to the ground and held her for university police. She was taken into custody and faces a preliminary charge of attempted murder, Purdue spokeswoman Jeanne Norberg said.

Finish With a Flourish

Hawaii and San Jose State combined to score 61 points in the fourth quarter of a game the Rainbow Warriors won, 62-41. The teams combined for five touchdowns in the period's first 5:44, went scoreless for more than six minutes, then combined for four more touchdowns in the final 3:04. Hawaii is 6-3 after going 0-12 last season.

4: Shutouts by St. John's, which beat Canisius, 45-0,

to move within one shutout of the Division I-AA season record set in 1978 by South Carolina State.

25: Points North Carolina has scored in four games since QB Ronald Curry suffered a ruptured Achilles' tendon.
