RHP Andy Ashby, a two-time all-star who resurrected his career with the Padres, was traded to the Phillies last night for three pitchers in a cost-cutting move by the Padres, the Associated Press learned. The Padres will receive Carlton Loewer, Steve Montgomery and prospect Adam Eaton for Ashby, two baseball sources said.
BOGGS TO FRONT OFFICE: Wade Boggs, 41, expects to move into the Devils Rays' front office as a scout, announcer and talent evaluator. GM Chuck LaMar was expected to fly back early from the general manager meetings in Dana Point, Calif., to attend a news conference called by Boggs for today, in which he plans to announce his retirement.
REJECTED: Miles Prentice's $75 million bid to purchase the Royals was rejected by baseball. Baseball officials have said since May that Prentice's group of 40-plus investors was too large and that it did not have enough money to successfully operate the franchise.
AN INTERNATIONAL GAME: Major league teams will play a series of exhibition games in the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Venezuela next March and could return to Cuba. The Red Sox and Astros will play a two-game series in Santo Domingo; the Braves and the Devil Rays will play two games in Caracas, Venezuela; and the Diamondbacks and Angels will play in Hermosillo, Mexico.
