University of Maryland Athletic Director Debbie Yow has received a two-year contract extension through Aug. 31, 2004, school president C.D. Mote Jr. announced yesterday.
"I'm very pleased Dr. Mote has confidence in my abilities and the direction of the program," Yow said before boarding a plane with the school's football team for its game today at Florida State. "I look forward to being Maryland's athletic director for years to come. There is a lot of work in front of us, which we are ready to tackle."
Yow, who declined to discuss financial details of the contract extension, will become president of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics in July 2000. She is a member of the NCAA management council and the NCAA Division I budget committee.
"She has excelled in fiscal management, competitive results and in compliance," Mote said in a statement. "More importantly, she has excelled as a leader, ensuring that we can take great pride in all the coaches and athletes who represent the University of Maryland."
Perhaps the biggest project facing Maryland is raising enough money to build a new on-campus basketball arena. The university's athletic department is seeking a naming donor to commit $25 million and needs to raise approximately $45 million, according to associate athletic director for external relations Joe Hull.
Yow got a five-year contract in 1994, and later received a three-year extension from former campus president William Kirwan.
