MATT LAWLER

School: Georgetown Prep.

Sport: Soccer.

Class: Senior.

Position: Forward.

Highlights: The four-year varsity starter scored winning goals twice last week to lead the Little Hoyas to their first Interstate Athletic Conference tournament championship. ... Lawler had the goals in a 1-0 semifinal victory over second-seeded Landon and in a 1-0 victory in the final over regular season champion Bullis. Lawler led Prep (9-7-2) with 13 goals this season. "He has long and accurate passes," said Coach Guy Fraiture. "He scored some goals [this season] that were true power ... some were 30-yarders." In Lawler's sophomore and junior seasons, Prep finished third in the regular season and lost in the semifinals of the IAC tournament to Sidwell Friends.

Notable: Has played defender with the Bethesda Bullets, a club team, since age 13. Playing different positions has helped his game. "It helps to know how defenders think when I'm playing forward, [and] it helps knowing how forwards think when I'm on defense," Lawler said. Said Fraiture: "As a young player it makes a big difference. ... He is very busy supporting the defense."

Personal: Maintains a 3.7 grade-point average. Would like to study history at Yale, University of California-Berkeley, Colgate or Brown. Has played soccer since age 6.
