Sarah Hicks scored 21 points, making five of Virginia Tech's six three-pointers, and the No. 18 Hokies defeated visiting Liberty, 60-45, last night in the first round of the Women's Preseason NIT.
Virginia Tech will face No. 3 Georgia on Wednesday.
Hicks, who made 5 of 10 three-point attempts, and Kim Seaver each had nine rebounds, and Nicole Jones grabbed eight. Tech outrebounded the Flames 41-23.
The Hokies (1-0) led 31-19 at halftime and never were seriously threatened after that. Liberty took more shots than Tech in the first 20 minutes, 26-22, but made only 30 percent to the Hokies' 50 percent.
Sarah Farley scored 13 points and Elena Kisseleva 12 for the Flames (0-1). Kisseleva was 2 for 2 from three-point range.
GEORGIA 76, UAB 75: Kelly Miller and Coco Miller each made two free throws in the final 22 seconds for the Bulldogs. Kelly Miller finished with 22.
Deanna Jackson had 28 points and 18 rebounds for UAB, which led 35-33 at halftime and 57-52 with 9 minutes 57 seconds remaining after a three-point play by Jackson.
BOSTON COLLEGE 83, MAINE 56: In another first-round game of the Women's Preseason NIT, Cal Bouchard, who made five three-pointers, scored all of her 20 points in the second half for the No. 20 Eagles, who advanced to face No. 22 Duke on Wednesday.
Becky Gottstein scored 16 of her 18 points in the first half, and the visiting Eagles took a 30-13 lead in the season opener for both teams. Jamie Cassidy led the Black Bears with 15 points.
DUKE 72, UNC GREENSBORO 47: Georgia Schweitzer scored 16 points and Sheana Mosch 12 for the host Blue Devils, who took control early and led 37-27 at halftime despite 9-for-26 shooting in the first half.
Lauren Rice added 11 points for Duke in the teams' season opener. Katie DelCampo led UNC Greensboro with 13 points.
ILLINOIS 112, W. MICHIGAN 73: Also in the first round of the Women's Preseason NIT, Tauja Catchings scored 20 of her 32 points in the first half for the No. 13 Illini.
Illinois will play Oklahoma State, a 73-55 winner over Northern Iowa, in Wednesday's quarterfinals.
SANTA BARBARA 77, UNLV 56: In the first round of the Women's Preseason NIT, the No. 14 Gauchos, playing at home, cruised as Kayte Christensen led the way with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
