Blair senior Lisa Weir played just two games as a setter before tonight's Maryland 4A volleyball semifinal against Severna Park, but she looked like a veteran by the end of the night.

Weir tallied 31 assists and senior Kelli Herod recorded 10 kills to lead the Blazers past the Falcons, 15-13, 16-14, 12-15, 15-3, at Essex Community College.

Trailing two games to one in a 4A West regional semifinal match against No. 3 Watkins Mill last week, Blair Coach Carrie Sanidad switched Weir--who had played the entire season as outside hitter--and senior setter Grace Chen, who was slowed by an injured ankle. Weir had last played setter two years ago for her offseason club team.

The Blazers (17-2) won the next three games and have not looked back, defeating No. 4 Whitman in the regional finals to advance to the state final with tonight's victory.

In the other semifinal, Bowie lost to 4A North champion Dulaney, 15-3, 15-5, 15-3. The Bulldogs (16-3) are the six-time 4A South champions. Dulaney (19-0) will play Blair in the championship at 5 p.m. Saturday at Catonsville Community College.

"Lisa Weir is an exceptional player," said Sanidad, whose team was making its first appearance in the state tournament. "Not that the setting position is anything new to her, but having not practiced or played [there] before with this team says a lot about her."

Blair rallied from deficits in the first and second games against Severna Park (15-4), which advanced to the state finals a year ago. Trailing 13-8 in the opening game, the Blazers got three kills from senior Nicole Reed. Trailing 14-12 in the second game, junior Lora Armstrong held off match point with a kill and the Blazers ran off four straight points to win the match.

"All the positive adjectives in the English language, I'm definitely feeling them right now," Weir said.
