Lucienne Berthieu scored a career-high 31 points as No. 19 Old Dominion beat Memphis, 99-60, yesterday in the first round of the Carrier Classic in Syracuse, N.Y.
The Lady Monarchs (3-1) will play Syracuse in today's championship. The Orangewomen defeated Northern Iowa, 64-63, in the other first-round game.
Old Dominion, which lost, 109-66, Nov. 26 to top-ranked Connecticut--the worst loss in school history--quickly took control of the game.
Berthieu, who shot 11 of 13, scored nine of her points during a 21-2 run in the first seven minutes. The Lady Tigers (3-3) never got closer than 13 points the rest of the game.
Hamchetou Maiga matched her career high with 16 points, Sharron Francis added 11 points and seven assists and Kim Giddens finished with 10 points for Old Dominion, which outrebounded Memphis 49-29.
* N.C. ST. 74, WAKE FOREST 54: In Raleigh, N.C., Kaayla Chones had 15 points and 11 rebounds to the lead the No. 6 Wolfpack.
Tynesha Lewis added 12 points, and Monica Bates had 10 for N.C. State (7-0 overall, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), which hit just eight of its first 22 shots and ended the game with a season-high 23 turnovers.
Summer Erb, who sat out most of the second half because of four fouls, finished with a season-low six points.
Alisha Mosley led Wake Forest (1-4, 0-1) with 10 points. Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick had 11 rebounds for the Deacons, helping them get 15 second-chance points.
The Wolfpack had two 10-0 runs in the final 6 minutes 51 seconds, while Wake Forest missed 14 of its last 18 shots.
* KANSAS 73, LOYOLA MARYMOUNT 58: In Lawrence, Kan., Lynn Pride had 19 points and 11 rebounds as the No. 18 Jayhawks won in the first round of the Jayhawk Classic.
The Jayhawks (4-0) advanced to today's championship game against UC Santa Barbara.
Suzi Raymant added 16 points for the Jayhawks, who used a 19-5 run midway through the second half to take a 19-point lead.
Rosa Bernasconi led the Lions (2-2) with 18 points.
* UC SANTA BARBARA 74, BYU 58: Kayte Christensen scored 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the No. 15 Gauchos (4-1) to the win in the first game of the Jayhawk Classic in Lawrence, Kan. The Cougars are 3-1.
* AMERICAN 65, GONZAGA 64: Kate Miller scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Eagles (3-1) to an overtime victory in the Lobos Shootout in Albuquerque. Jessica Malone led Gonzaga (3-1) with 17 points and eight rebounds.
