Stromile Swift scored 21 points as Louisiana State overcame a sluggish first half to defeat the Howard men, 81-55, last night in Baton Rouge, La.

Howard's Reggie Morris, who led the Bison (0-7) with 22 points, hit a runner in the lane to tie the game at 47 with just over 10 minutes left. But Swift hit a layup to key an 18-0 run that put the game out of reach. Swift and Jabari Smith (11 points) scored 14 of the 18 points over that span.

"In the second half, we didn't use the width of the court as we did in the first half," Howard Coach Kirk Saulny said. "The first half we did a great job of execution. We looked to spread the defense and use our guard speed to penetrate and suck the defense in, then kick it out to our shooters. In the second half, we didn't execute so well, and we dribbled to ball in the middle of the court way too much, and we didn't do enough passing."

Louisiana State (11-0) led by only three points at halftime, but shot 65 percent in the second half.

* U-VA. WOMEN 83, SIENA 43: The Cavaliers shot 52 percent and held the Saints to 15 field goals in Charlottesville.

Schuye LaRue (Carroll) led three Virginia players in double figures with 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting; she also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Telisha Quarles added 18 points and six assists, and Svetlana Volnaya had 10 points, as the Cavaliers improved to 6-4.

* BEST WESTERN HOLIDAY CLASSIC: The Bowie State women won their eighth straight with a 98-55 victory over Spelman (5-6) in the tournament's first round in Bowie. Tiffany Moss scored 19 points, and Deidra Fields and Beverly Winstead each had 15 for the Bulldogs, who improved to 9-2.

Bowie State will face UDC, a 78-65 winner over Division III Lincoln (1-10), in the championship game.
