The signing probably went unnoticed except by those who are devoted to the daily transactions column: "CALGARY FLAMES: Signed C Shaun Sutter."

Sutter, 19, had just one goal for the Medicine Hat Juniors, yet he received a $225,000 signing bonus, plus a three-year minor league contract worth about $60,000 per year.

Sutter happens to be the son of Flames Coach Brian Sutter. The signing caused a big stir in Calgary, where financial pressures have kept the Flames from signing other prospects.

KELLY IS STABLE: Hall of Famer Red Kelly was in stable condition yesterday at a local hospital after suffering a heart attack Friday at his Toronto home. Kelly, 71, who has experienced heart trouble before, had just completed 50 push-ups when he felt a sharp pain up his left arm.

Kelly played in the NHL from 1947 to 1968, with the Red Wings, Maple Leafs and Kings.

STILLMAN AILING: F Cory Stillman needs surgery on his left shoulder and will be out of the Flames' lineup indefinitely.

Following arthroscopic surgery, Stillman's physician, Nicholas Mohtadi, determined another operation was necessary to repair damage. The Flames did not say exactly what was wrong with the shoulder, which Stillman has said was dislocated twice in his career.
