Ohio State junior LB Na'il Diggs said yesterday that he will give up his final year of eligibility to enter the NFL draft.

Diggs is the 13th Ohio State player since 1991 to leave early.

Diggs led the Buckeyes with 94 tackles, 15 tackles for losses and 6 sacks this season. He has 18 career sacks and 37 tackles for losses, both in the top seven in school history. . . . Michigan State junior WR Plaxico Burress said he will pass up his final year of college eligibility to enter the NFL draft. Burress led the Spartans with 53 catches for 957 yards and nine touchdowns during the regular season.

SIDELINED: Texas QB Major Applewhite will have surgery Jan. 14 to repair ligament damage in his left knee and could need six months of rehabilitation, school officials said.

Tests performed Monday revealed a torn ACL.

He will miss spring drills, but is expected to be cleared for workouts when the team begins practicing in August.

DEPARTING: Kentucky backup C Nate Knight has left the basketball team, Coach Tubby Smith said. Knight, a 6-foot-9 junior, played 79 minutes this season behind starter Jamaal Magloire, averaging 1.7 points and 2.2 rebounds in nine games. . . .
