Steve Miles hit two free throws with nine seconds remaining to give Coastal Carolina a 74-73 victory over American last night at Bender Arena, ending the Eagles' five-game home winning streak.

Miles had scored only six points in the past two games for Coastal Carolina (3-9), but his 16 clutch points helped the Chanticleers end their six-game road losing streak.

American (6-7) got a career high 20 points from Tim Washington, but the Eagles could not hold a 73-72 lead in the final moments. AU's Hasheem Alexander (17 points) missed two free throws, allowing Miles to get to the line at the other end with a chance to give his team the lead.

American erased a 42-35 halftime deficit by opening the second half with a 17-5 run, including a five-minute stretch in which Coastal Carolina didn't score a point.

American committed 15 fouls in the second half that gave Coastal Carolina 18 free throw attempts.

Torrey Butler led the Chanticleers with 19 points and 13 rebounds and Matt Gladieux had 15 points (14 in the first half) for Coastal Carolina.

S. CAROLINA ST. 71, HOWARD MEN 63: Mike Wiatre scored 21 points and Duane Johnson added 15 as the Bulldogs (6-10, 3-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) won at Burr Gymnasium.

Antonio Michell scored 23 points and made 8 of 19 shots. He was the only Howard player to reach double figures. He also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. The Bison fell to 1-10, 1-1.

HOWARD WOMEN 76, S. CAROLINA ST. 52: Andrea Gardner scored 14 points and grabbed a career-high 22 rebounds to lead Howard to the win at Burr Gymnasium. The Lady Bison improved to 5-7, 3-0 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, while the Bulldogs fall to 2-13, 1-6.

Foward Reagan Carter led the Lady Bison with 15 points and Alana Lambert and Chanell Washington each scored 12.
