In the greatest game of his 11 NBA seasons, Cliff Robinson scored a career-high 50 points last night, the most by any player in the league this season, and tied the Phoenix record for points in a quarter with 23 as the Suns beat Denver, 113-100.
Robinson, sent home from the team's shoot-around earlier in the day because of the flu, broke the scoring record for the eight-year-old America West Arena. The previous mark was 42 by Kevin Johnson of Phoenix on April 3, 1994.
Toronto's Vince Carter had the league's previous high this season with 47 on Friday night against Milwaukee.
"I just think I'm confident about what I can do," Robinson said. "I've played against a lot of guys in the NBA. I know what I can do against certain guys. Against the younger guys, I feel I have an advantage because I've been around a little longer. I think I've just kind of matured into the type of player that I am now, where I better understand how I can attack defenders."
Tom Chambers scored the most points in a game for Phoenix, with 60 and 56 in the 1989-90 season. Robinson's 23 first-quarter points also were an arena record.
"I don't think he took a bad shot," Phoenix's Jason Kidd said.
Ron Mercer scored 25 for Denver, which lost its fourth in a row.
Robinson had 29 through two quarters and 40 through three. He made 17 of 26 shots and 13 of 15 free throws.
Robinson's previous career high was 41, when he played for Portland, against Minnesota on Jan. 7, 1996.
HEAT 94, GRIZZLIES 83: Still smarting from Vancouver's 91-87 victory in Miami earlier this month, the Heat--led by Alonzo Mourning's 27 points--bore down in the fourth quarter to win on the road.
"Oh, it was in my mind, most definitely," said Mourning, referring to the loss to Vancouver, the Heat's first at its new American Airlines Arena, on Jan. 4. "I know with the way we played against that team that that wasn't Heat basketball."
KINGS 113, CAVALIERS 102: Host Sacramento won its fifth straight and ninth in 11 games as Chris Webber had 25 points and 11 rebounds, and Jason Williams added 20 points and 10 assists.
