Ed Cota, point guard for the struggling North Carolina men's basketball team, did not practice yesterday because of a viral infection and his status for today's game against Florida State is uncertain. Team doctors will determine before the game whether Cota can play. Cota's virus is not the flu, doctors said. Cota leads the ACC in assists with 8.6 per game. . . .
Fs Sam Clancy, the Pac-10's second-leading scorer at 17.2 points per game, and Jarvis Turner will miss the rest of Southern California's season with injuries suffered Thursday. The Trojans (9-5, 3-0 Pac-10) play No. 2 Arizona today.
Clancy fractured a bone in his right foot. Turner, the Trojans' top reserve, already had missed eight games with a stress fracture in his left foot. He fractured his left ankle Thursday.
* NEW DATES: Seton Hall set new dates for basketball games that were canceled following a dormitory fire Wednesday that killed three students. The men's basketball game at No. 6 Syracuse has been rescheduled for Feb. 7. The women's team will play at Boston College Feb. 7 and host Syracuse Feb. 20.
* JONES EXTENSION: Hawaii football coach June Jones was given a three-year contract extension.
