Howard interim men's basketball coach Billy Coward will continue running the team through the end of the season, the school informed him this week. Coward also named Russell Davis his assistant coach, the first hire Coward has made since taking the job Jan. 8 after school officials fired Kirk Saulny and his staff.

Davis joined the team last weekend for the Bison's loss at Bethune-Cookman in Florida, leaving his job as coach at Washington Ethical High School. After coaching four games by himself, Coward said Davis will help him greatly.

"He understands the philosophy and psychology, and he is very good with the X's and O's," Coward said. "He has been a tremendous asset."

The Bison (1-14, 1-5 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) have lost five straight and 27 of 28. Howard's game at Morgan State, originally scheduled for tonight, has been moved back to Thursday because of the weather.

Coward said that he and Davis will be with the team until at least the end of the season.

"We are officially on board for the rest of the season," Coward said.

Davis hopes becoming Coward's assistant will give him a shot at the full-time head coaching position, a job Coward already has stated he doesn't want.

"That's the goal," Davis said. "This is fun, and it's in my blood. I've been coaching my whole life."

Davis, who was also a high school assistant under Mike Glick at Pallotti from 1993 to 1998, took over at Washington Ethical this year after Glick left Spalding High School. Washington Ethical was 0-5 before Davis accepted Coward's offer.

"We're going to be all right, and there's a lot of potential here," Davis said. "We've got a good team."
