The snowstorm that blanketed the Washington area yesterday also wiped clean the slate of events taking place throughout the region--postponing everything from the Washington Wizards-New York Knicks game at MCI Center to a full schedule of more than 150 girls and boys high school basketball games. In addition, many events scheduled for today also have been postponed.

The storm, which pummeled the entire mid-Atlantic Region, also forced the postponement of the Maryland-North Carolina men's basketball game scheduled for tonight in Chapel Hill, N.C. The game has been moved to Thursday and still will be televised by ESPN. Tonight's George Washington-St. Bonaventure men's game remains scheduled for 7:30 at Smith Center.

The Wizards-Knicks game, postponed by the NBA, will be made up March 8 at 7 p.m. at MCI Center. Tickets for last night's game can be used for that date. Tickets also can be purchased for the makeup game because last night's contest was not sold out. No other NBA games were postponed because of the snowstorm that hit much of the East Coast.

The Wizards are scheduled to play the Raptors in Toronto tonight. Washington, which normally travels to visiting sites the night before games, was scheduled to fly to Toronto this morning from Baltimore-Washington International Airport.

Nearly every other sporting event in the Washington area was postponed or canceled because of the snow. The Army-Navy women's and men's basketball games scheduled for tonight at Navy's Alumni Hall have been moved to Thursday. Tickets for tonight's games will be honored. The women's game is scheduled to start at 5:15 p.m.; the men at 7:30.

Gallaudet postponed its women's basketball game against Salisbury State last night and tonight's men's game against Salisbury. The tentative makeup date for the women is Feb. 7; the men's game will be played at 5 p.m. Thursday, prior to a women's game against Western Maryland at 7.

Bowie State postponed last night's men's and women's basketball games against Virginia Union. No makeup dates have been set. Catholic's men's and women's basketball games at Mary Washington, originally scheduled for tonight, will be played Thursday at 6 and 8 p.m., respectively.

Last night's area high school basketball schedule, generally one of the busiest nights of the week for games, was completely postponed, as well as many games scheduled for tonight.

Yesterday's postponements pushed D.C.'s public schools two days behind in its scheduling efforts--the Jan. 18 storm forced the postponement of a full slate of games that have yet to be made up.

"We do not have an exact date for when these games will be rescheduled," Allen Chin, director of the D.C. Interscholastic Athletic Association, said late yesterday. "It's all going to be based on availability of officials. But we're already a day behind. This just complicates matters."

In Maryland, all Montgomery, Prince George's and Anne Arundel county athletic events scheduled for yesterday and today have been postponed. The policy for Anne Arundel and Prince George's counties is to move yesterday's postponed events to Thursday. Montgomery County postponed yesterday's games until Feb. 3.

In Virginia, Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria, Prince William, Loudoun and Fauquier county schools announced early yesterday that today's classes and activities also were canceled. The Northern Region policy for making up basketball games is to reschedule postponed games on the first available date for both schools.

Laurel Park officials will decide this morning whether thoroughbred racing will take place as scheduled. Start time was scheduled for 12:35 p.m.
