Mighty Ducks 3, Avalanche 2
-- Andy McDonald scored 4 minutes 49 seconds into overtime, lifting the Anaheim Mighty Ducks to a 3-2 victory today over the Colorado Avalanche.
Joe Sakic scored twice for Colorado, including the tying goal with 9:15 left that forced overtime.
Petr Sykora gave Anaheim a 2-1 lead on the power play at 2:58 of the second period. He snapped a quick shot from the left circle past goalie David Aebischer off a feed from Adam Oates. Oates and Sykora were acquired in the offseason to help generate offense for Anaheim, but neither player had scored a goal in the first five Ducks games.
Stanislav Chistov had the other goal for Anaheim, which snapped a four-game winless streak (0-3-1). The Avalanche hadn't lost in Anaheim since March 15, 1998 (7-0-2).
Rookie goalie Martin Gerber earned the victory in his first NHL start. Mighty Ducks Coach Mike Babcock started Gerber in place of Jean-Sebastien Giguere, who had played all but one period of Anaheim's first five games.
Gerber, 28, played in the Swedish elite leagues for several seasons. He saw action in the final period of Anaheim's 4-2 loss at Dallas on Oct. 11 and didn't allow a goal.
Chistov, also a rookie, tapped in a loose puck to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead at 6:57 of the first period. Sakic deflected a wrist shot from the point by Rob Blake past Gerber on a power play midway through the opening period to tie it.
