QB Brett Favre won't need surgery on his sprained left knee, and the Packers are optimistic he won't miss any games. An MRI exam yesterday confirmed the team's original diagnosis of a sprained lateral collateral ligament and showed no structural damage to the knee.

"Ice and rehab will be what's going on with him this week as he prepares for the Monday night Miami game," Coach Mike Sherman said. The Packers are idle this week. Their next game is Nov. 4 against Miami.

Sherman gave the players the day off. Favre isn't scheduled to speak with the media until Wednesday. He won't practice this week.

Favre, a three-time NFL MVP, was injured Sunday during the third quarter of the Packers' 30-9 victory over Washington.

* INJURY UPDATE: Buccaneers QB Brad Johnson has a fractured left rib and is doubtful for this week's game against the Panthers. Johnson was hurt during the opening quarter of Sunday's 20-10 loss to the Eagles, but he didn't leave the game until midway through the fourth quarter. . . .

Rookie CB-PR Phillip Buchanon will miss eight weeks with a broken left wrist -- yet more bad news for the reeling Raiders. Buchanon, the team's top draft pick out of Miami, was hurt in the second quarter of Sunday's 27-21 overtime loss to the Chargers and did not return. He underwent surgery Sunday night and had pins inserted into his wrist. . . .

Broncos C Tom Nalen will miss the rest of the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee against the Chiefs. Nalen was hit from the side late in Denver's 37-34 overtime victory over the Chiefs on Sunday. An MRI revealed a complete tear of the ACL and some cartilage damage. . . .

Chris Weinke spent the night in the hospital with a concussion, leaving the Panthers with rookie Randy Fasani as their only healthy quarterback for this week's game against the Buccaneers. Weinke was knocked out of Sunday's loss to the Falcons and spent the night in a Charlotte hospital being treated for a serious concussion. He was released yesterday, but Coach John Fox said he didn't know if Weinke would be able to face the Bucs and their top-ranked defense.

* COWBOYS CHANGE QUARTERBACKS: QB Quincy Carter is out and Chad Hutchinson is in as the Cowboys' starter.

The Cowboys made the surprising switch, one day after Carter threw four interceptions -- two near the end zone -- in a 9-6 overtime loss at Arizona.

* ROLLE FINED: Titans CB Samari Rolle was fined $7,500 by the league for a helmet-to-helmet hit that left Jaguars QB Mark Brunell with a concussion on Oct. 13.
