Northern Region field hockey tournament: Oakton High School, Wednesday and Thursday at 6 p.m.
Opening-round play begins as the top four teams from the region's four districts try to take their first step toward the state finals. No. 6 Centreville, No. 7 W.T. Woodson, Lake Braddock and host Oakton are among the top contenders to represent the region.
Maryland region quarterfinals, Thursday
For some of the area's best teams, including No. 4 Bethesda-Chevy Chase and No. 10 Walter Johnson, these games will be their first in nearly four weeks.
Concorde District semifinals at Chantilly, today at 5 p.m.: Centreville and Chantilly will meet for the third time this year in the semifinals of the Northern Region's toughest district. The teams split their two regular season games, with each match going to five games. Herndon plays No. 4 Westfield in the first semifinal, with the Centreville-Chantilly match to follow.
Anne Arundel County championship, at Meade, Tuesday at 6 p.m.: No. 7 Arundel beat defending county champion Severna Park for the first time in at least 20 years in mid-October. The teams will meet again Tuesday, as Arundel aims for its first county championship.
