The Mavericks signed F Mark Strickland, a free agent who has spent seven seasons in the league.

The 6-foot-10 Strickland was to be in uniform last night against New Jersey. He is averaging 4.6 points and 2.8 rebounds for a career in which he has played with Indiana, Miami, Denver, New Jersey and Atlanta.

Strickland was with the Hawks last season and most recently played in France and Puerto Rico.

The Mavericks signed Strickland under a special NBA roster rule. A team with three players on its injured list may substitute an active player if another player misses a minimum of three straight games because of injury.

* INJURY REPORT: Cavaliers F Darius Miles was placed on the injured list with tendinitis in his left knee, the same one he had surgery on this summer.

Miles, acquired during a July trade with Clippers for G Andre Miller, has been bothered by soreness in his knee the past few days.

"He's going to be out a while," Coach John Lucas said before last night's game against San Antonio. "We're going to miss him." . . .

SuperSonics C Jerome James, who missed three straight games with a strained tendon in his right foot, has developed a stress fracture that will keep him out four to six weeks.

Coach Nate McMillan said James, averaging 3.8 points and two rebounds, probably won't return until after Jan. 1.
