Alana Beard scored 15 points as No. 1 Duke held Hampton to 23 percent shooting in a 71-34 victory yesterday in the first game of the Paradise Jam tournament in Charlotte Amalie, U.S. Virgin Islands.
Duke (3-0) followed last weekend's win over No. 2 Tennessee with another strong performance in the round-robin tournament.
"We are here enjoying ourselves, which is good, but at the same time, we need to be ready to play," Duke Coach Gail Goestenkors said. "We had no patience offensively."
The Lady Pirates (1-1) missed their first nine field goal attempts and didn't make a basket until there was 8 minutes 42 seconds left in the half.
* PURDUE 103, SAVANNAH STATE 25: In West Lafayette, Ind., Shereka Wright scored 19 points as the No. 6 Boilermakers (3-0) enjoyed the largest victory margin in school history. Wright became the fourth-fastest Purdue player to reach 1,000 career points when she scored on a baseline drive with 11:58 left.
* ARKANSAS 54, OLD DOMINION 49: India Lewis scored 21 points to lead the No. 17 Lady Razorbacks (3-0) in the Paradise Jam. Shareese Grant scored to pull Old Dominion to 50-49 with 17 seconds remaining, but Lewis hit four straight free throws to seal it.
