West Springfield 85, Mount Vernon 52

West Springfield 6-foot-2 senior forward Janielle Dodds anticipated the Spartans might have trouble matching up with a quick Mount Vernon team that started no player taller than 5-7 last night.

But once Dodds and 6-0 Dominique Mazzuchi took advantage of their height, the Spartans cruised to a 85-52 victory in a AAA Virginia nondistrict season opener for both teams in West Springfield.

Dodds scored 13 points during a Spartans' 23-3 run in the second quarter that catapulted West Springfield to a 40-21 lead at halftime.

"At first we were a bit shaky with [Mount Vernon's] press, because they would send so many people swarming to the ball," said Dodds, who finished with 21 points and six rebounds. "Once we started to take care of the ball we were able to pass the ball up the court, and get some easy baskets."

Mount Vernon cut the deficit to 12 in the opening minutes of the third quarter on a 9-0 run comprised of three consecutive three-pointers. But the Spartans countered with a 16-2 run for a 58-31 lead. Mazzuchi led the charge with eight of her game-high 23 points during that span.

"What we're doing is going to be effective," Mount Vernon Coach Kenny Farmer said. "But we have to be more consistent about it."

Majors senior guard Nikki Rowland led her team with 14 points, and India Thomas and Ashley Ling each finished with nine.
