The Division II Pioneer Bowl, which was to have included Bowie State, has been canceled because it lost investors and its promoter failed to meet two payment deadlines.

Orlando-based Jericho Communications Media Group issued a statement Thursday, saying it missed two payments of a combined $31,750 to the Tampa Sports Authority and the game's host, Raymond James Stadium.

The Pioneer Bowl was moved to Tampa this year after five years in Atlanta.

The game matches teams from historically black conferences, the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

SIAC champion Tuskegee and CIAA runner-up Bowie State were set to meet in the sixth annual game on Dec. 15.

* BOWL FOR BEARCATS: Gino Guidugli threw four touchdown passes -- three to Jon Olinger -- as visiting Cincinnati beat East Carolina, 42-26, to clinch a share of the Conference USA championship. The Bearcats (7-6, 6-2) earned a bid to the New Orleans Bowl, in which they will face North Texas on Dec. 17.

* COACHES HIRED: Former Texas Tech running backs coach Art Briles is the new coach at the University of Houston. Briles, 47, signed a five-year contract to replace Dana Dimel, who was fired late last month.

The Cougars, who have had two winning seasons since 1990, were 8-26 in Dimel's three seasons. . . .

Eastern Kentucky hired Louisville offensive line coach Danny Hope as its head coach.
