UCLA fired football coach Bob Toledo yesterday because first-year AD Dan Guerrero felt the program was not heading in the right direction.

"We need to raise the bar, we need to start winning Pac-10 championships again," Guerrero said.

The Bruins are 7-5, including a 52-21 loss to No. 5 Southern California on Nov. 23 and a 48-27 loss to No. 7 Washington State on Saturday.

Toledo will not coach against New Mexico in the Dec. 25 Las Vegas Bowl. Ed Kezirian, assistant director of academic services, will serve as interim head coach. . . .

Kentucky football coach Guy Morriss resigned and, according to a source, was to become the new coach at Baylor. Morriss will be introduced during a news conference Wednesday, said a source close to the Bears' program, who spoke on condition of anonymity. . . .

Iowa QB Brad Banks was named the Associated Press college player of the year.

* CHANEY HAS PNEUMONIA: Temple University basketball coach John Chaney will remain hospitalized for a second night in Philadelphia after having pneumonia diagnosed. Chaney, 70, was admitted to Temple University Hospital after feeling "a little down" during the team's practice, school spokesman Chet Zukowski said.
