The Hawks (7-0) are beating opponents by an average of 35 points headed into the finals of the Pohanka Chantilly Classic at 9:15 tonight against Chantilly (8-0). Led by senior forward Jahmar Claxton (33 points), Hayfield's first two wins in the tournament were 73-30 over Mills Godwin (Richmond) and 83-31 over Yorktown.
With their football season not ending until Dec. 15 (with a AAA Division 6 championship), the Bulldogs did not play their first basketball game until Dec. 20, their lone outing before sweeping three games in the Mount Vernon Christmas Tournament. Junior center Jermaine Hill totaled 54 points in wins over West Potomac, Osbourn Park and Mount Vernon.
Although the Hornets (8-1) suffered their first loss of the season at the Denbigh Holiday Classic in Newport News, 81-66, to C.H. Flowers, they notched a 62-57 win over then-No. 13 Potomac.
The senior guard led Eagles to the championship of the Member One Holiday Hoopla in Salem, Va., scoring 56 points in three games, including 23 in a first-round win over defending Virginia AAA champion Cave Spring (now a Group AA school). Osbourn lost, 84-59, to Roanoke Catholic in the final.
The junior swingman scored a season-high 27 points in a 78-66 victory over Westfield in the Fairfax City Auto Dealers Holiday Classic championship. He made 10 field goals and all seven free throw attempts. The Rebels (7-1) had lost to Westfield in the 2001 holiday tournament final.
