Kasib Powell scored 21 points and No. 25 Texas Tech held Houston to 28 percent shooting in a 62-48 victory today.
The Red Raiders (9-1) never trailed against the Cougars (2-7), who made 17 of 61 field-goal attempts.
"I think they're a solid defensive team," Houston Coach Ray McCallum said.
Texas Tech led by 28 points early in the second half, but the Cougars went on a 18-4 run to whittle the lead to 12 points with less than a minute remaining.
Red Raiders Coach Bob Knight stopped the comeback attempt by putting three starters back on the floor.
Pawel Storozynski scored 14 points for Texas Tech; Andre Emmett added 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Red Raiders led 35-16 at halftime.
Louis Truscott scored 16 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Houston. In the first half he scored all six of Houston's points until 13 minutes into the game, when Bryan Shelton made a three-pointer. However, Houston did not break into double figures until there were four minutes left in the half.
Five minutes into the second half, the Cougars had twice as many turnovers as baskets. They finished with 22 turnovers.
It was the second-lowest point total Texas Tech has yielded this season and Knight's 796th career coaching victory.
