Montreal GM Andre Savard was fined $50,000 and Coach Michel Therrien was hit for $25,000 by the NHL yesterday for confronting game officials after the Canadiens lost to the Devils on Tuesday.

Referee Kerry Fraser disallowed a Montreal goal by Mike Ribeiro in the first period and allowed Joe Nieuwendyk's game-winning, third-period goal even though Canadiens G Jeff Hackett was knocked down by the Devils' Jeff Friesen.

Savard and Therrien shouted at Fraser as he left the ice at the end of the game and Savard had to be restrained from going into the officials' dressing room at Continental Airlines Arena.

Fraser told a pool reporter that a goalie can be bumped when he's out of his crease and playing the puck. "There may be a misconception that goalies are protected everywhere on the ice, that they can't be touched," he said. "That's a fallacy."

* ALL-STAR COACHES: Vancouver's Marc Crawford and Ottawa's Jacques Martin will coach the NHL all-star teams, with Crawford earning the Western Conference spot Wednesday night with a victory over Martin's Senators. Crawford edged Detroit's Dave Lewis, who will be the assistant coach. Martin will coach the East, with Philadelphia's Ken Hitchcock serving as assistant.

* THORNTON OUT: Bruins C Joe Thornton has an infected elbow and will miss today's game against the Sabres.
