Highlights: Finished third on balance beam (9.525) and fifth all-around (36.925) at last week's Virginia AAA Northern Region championships. Will compete in the all-around competition at Saturday's state meet in Virginia Beach. Won Liberty District balance beam (9.55) and all-around (35.975) titles two weeks ago, leading Langley to its third consecutive district team crown.

Notable: Team co-captain. Set a school record on balance beam with a 9.9 in January. "When I got off the beam, I knew I had just hit a good routine," she said. "When they flashed the score, the whole place went crazy. I was almost in tears."

Personal: Carries a 3.3 grade-point average taking all honors and advanced placement courses. Member of Key Club. Will begin tutoring students at Cooper Middle School in McLean this month. Volunteer efforts with St. Luke's Church youth group include food drives for homeless and delivering Christmas presents to disadvantaged children.

Sport: Swimming.

Year: Senior.

Highlights: Won the 200-yard freestyle, finished second in 500 freestyle (in personal-best time) and anchored Sherwood's first-place 200 and 400 freestyle relays at last weekend's Montgomery County Division I championships. Before that meet, Tappis was undefeated in individual freestyle, butterfly and medley events this season.

Notable: Four-year member of Sherwood's swim team. Was team MVP last season and is co-captain this year. Swam first leg of Sherwood's coed 8 x 50-yard relay team that set a Montgomery County record at last year's Division I relay carnival. Qualified for United States Swimming junior nationals in 100, 200 and 400 freestyle this past summer in Boca Raton, Fla.

Personal: National Honor Society member carries a 3.9 grade-point average in classes that include three advanced placement courses. Will compete for the University of Maryland swim team next year. Runs the peer tutoring program at Sherwood.
