Bowie State Men 72,

Virginia Union 71

-- Jon Smith's short jumper with 24 seconds left lifted Bowie State to a 72-71 victory over Virginia Union tonight for its first Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's title.

The Bulldogs (26-4) earned an automatic berth in the NCAA Division II tournament.

Tim Washington scored 15 of his 21 points in the second half and was named the tournament's most valuable player.

Bowie State, making its first appearance in the CIAA final, trailed 41-32 at halftime against Virginia Union, a 14-time league champion. But the Bulldogs took their first lead, 58-57, with 6 minutes 50 seconds remaining. Neither team led by more than three points the rest of the way.

Cornelius McMurray's three-pointer gave Bowie State a 70-69 lead with 1:07 remaining. The Panthers (17-10) went back ahead with 46 seconds to go before Smith's jumper regained the lead for the Bulldogs.

"We're too good of a team and had too good leadership not to win this game down the stretch," Bowie State Coach Luke D'Alessio said. "And that's what happened. We made the plays when it counted."

Smith made all six of his field goal attempts and finished with 12 points. Stephen Moss-Kelley had 13 points. Duan Crockett led the Panthers with 22 points.

In the women's final, Shaw easily defeated Johnson C. Smith, 77-54.
