Langley at Hayfield, AAA Northern Region boys' quarterfinal, today, 7 p.m.
Of the eight remaining teams in the region tournament, Langley averages the fewest three-pointers (2.84 per game), while Hayfield makes the most (7.91). The Saxons will have to stop Hayfield's three-point threats, Michael Lee and A.J. Fitzgerald (first and fourth, respectively, in the region), while Langley will rely on the inside presence of 6-foot-5 Will Monica and 6-6 Michael Housman. In the teams' first meeting, Hayfield won, 64-56, despite Monica's 30 points.
W.T. Woodson at T.C. Williams, AAA Northern Region boys' quarterfinal, today, 7 p.m.
This is a matchup of two defense-minded teams which have each been ranked at some point this season. W.T. Woodson has allowed the second-fewest points in the region at 51.5 points per game, while T.C. Williams has allowed the fourth-lowest total at 53.6.
Liberty vs. Fauquier, AA Region II boys' semifinal, today, 7 p.m.
The third installment of this rivalry between Fauquier County's two public schools has plenty on the line -- the winner of this AA Region II semifinal will earn a berth to the state tournament. Fauquier won the first two meetings, including a 58-49 decision in the Northwestern District championship on Feb. 24. The difference has been Fauquier guard Nathan Johnson, who sank a total of 10 three-pointers in the two games.
Lee at Lake Braddock, AAA Northern Region girls' quarterfinal, today, 7 p.m.
When the teams played in late December, Lake Braddock was without leading scorer Abby Robertson, who missed nine games with a broken left foot. Lee won that game, 52-46, led by 21 points from Kristin Key and 10 from 6-foot senior Ashley York. But the 6-2 Robertson, one of only three players in the Northern Region to average more than 20 points per game, has scored at least 17 points in each game since her return, and the Bruins have won six of nine.
Chantilly at West Springfield, potential AAA Northern Region girls' semifinal, Tuesday, 6 p.m.
If Chantilly defeats Langley and West Springfield tops Madison tonight, the teams will play a rematch of last year's Northern Region title game with a state tournament berth at stake. Going into the quarterfinals, West Springfield has won 18 straight, and Chantilly 20 of 21. West Springfield relies on senior forwards Janielle Dodds (17.6 ppg) and Dominique Mazzuchi (10.3 ppg), and Chantilly depends on senior guards Alena Koshansky (20.5 ppg) and Caitlyn Gorski (11.8 ppg). All four have more than 1,000 career points.
