Friendly at Gwynn Park, 3A East boys' quarterfinal, today, 7 p.m.
Friendly (20-1) defeated Gwynn Park twice in the regular season and is the region tournament's second seed. Still, the Patriots must play this game at Gwynn Park, where the Yellow Jackets (18-5) have lost one playoff game in Coach Steve Matthews's 11 seasons. The one home playoff loss for 10th-seeded Gwynn Park -- last year's region champion -- came against Centennial in the 2001 2A South Region quarterfinals.
McDonough at Thomas Stone, 3A South boys' quarterfinal, today, 7 p.m.
A pair of high-scoring seniors should be the key in this matchup. Top-seeded Thomas Stone (17-3) has forward Daniel Bell, the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference's leading scorer at 24.1 points per game. Eighth-seeded McDonough (11-10) counters with guard Tre Morrissette, who ranks third in the league at 20 ppg. While both players are just as comfortable shooting three-pointers as they are driving to the basket, the key tonight should be Morrissette's effectiveness against Thomas Stone senior point guard Antonio Lewis. Lewis, last fall's All-Met quarterback, is one of the only guards in the region who can match Morrissette's quickness.
Springbrook at Churchill, 4A West girls' quarterfinal, Tuesday, 7 p.m.
Top-seeded Churchill (19-2) has won 33 of its past 34 games against Montgomery County opponents. The Bulldogs' only blemish? A 55-52 loss at home to Springbrook on Dec. 19. Eighth-seeded Springbrook (16-6) enters the game on a six-game winning streak, including Saturday's 56-49 victory over ninth-seeded Blair in the first round.
Broadneck at Arundel, 4A East girls' quarterfinal, Tuesday, 7 p.m.
Two of Anne Arundel County's leading scorers meet: Arundel sophomore guard Alex McGuire (17.9 ppg, second-highest in the county) and Broadneck senior forward Danielle Gross (17.5 ppg, third). Top-seeded Arundel (19-3), the county co-champion, has won its past 10 games, with eighth-seeded Broadneck (11-11) entering on a two-game winning streak.
