The Yankees' and Indians' home openers set for today were postponed because of forecasts of heavy snow.

The game between New York and the Twins has been rescheduled for Tuesday at 4:05 p.m. The Indians-White Sox game will be played Tuesday at 3:05. The forecast for today in New York and Cleveland is for snow all day and temperatures in the thirties.

* A KEEPER: A college student who caught Sammy Sosa's 500th home run baseball considered giving it to him but has decided to keep it and find out what it's worth.

"It crossed my mind to give it back," Zach Kirk said. "At the same time, I'm 22 and a senior in college. It could be a blessing. I'm going to keep it and try to sell it."

* MOVES: Mariners C Dan Wilson was activated from the DL and placed in the starting lineup against Texas. To make room, the Mariners optioned C Pat Borders to Class AAA Tacoma. . . .

The Twins placed RHP Mike Fetters on the 15-day DL with a strained left hamstring and recalled RHP Juan Rincon from Class AAA Rochester.

* JETER STATUS: Derek Jeter expects another encouraging result today when he gets a second opinion on his dislocated left shoulder. The Yankees' shortstop will fly to Birmingham to be examined by noted orthopedist James Andrews. Team doctors said Friday that Jeter's injury should be treated conservatively and not with an operation. Surgery could have sidelined him most of the season.
