Capitals 3, Lightning 0: Olaf Kolzig stopped all 40 shots he faced, Tampa Bay went 0 for 6 on the power play and Washington scored once in each period to cement the team's first shutout win of the season.

Feb. 4 at Tampa Bay

Capitals 5, Lightning 1: Jaromir Jagr netted the 500th goal of his career and his 30th of the season with a hat trick, and the Capitals came out of the all-star break with a resounding win that seemed to prime them for a run to the division title.

Feb. 17 at Tampa Bay

Lighting 3, Capitals 1: The Capitals led 1-0 at the second intermission but surrendered three third-period goals. The once-foundering Lighting used this game to slice into Washington's six-point lead and begin a 13-2-7 tear to win its first division title.
