Bishop Ireton has hired Chuck Driesell as its boys' basketball coach, Athletic Director Mark Heiser said yesterday. Driesell, a former college coach and son of legendary college coach Lefty Driesell, replaces Pete Hamer, who resigned last month after nine seasons.
Driesell, who served as an assistant at Georgetown under former coach Craig Esherick, has also been head coach at Marymount and was an assistant under his father at James Madison.
South Lakes football coach Joe Trabucco resigned after two seasons so he can move to Florida to be closer to his wife's family, he said. Trabucco, 55, leaves with a record of 14-9, including winning the Virginia AAA Northern Region Division 5 title in 2003. . . .
Kira Orr resigned as the Bullis girls' basketball coach after one season to pursue opportunities to coach at the collegiate level, she said. Orr led the Bulldogs to a 23-3 record and their fifth straight Independent School League AA tournament title last season.
A Police Escort
Howard County police were called to Centennial High School in Ellicott City to make sure two lacrosse referees could safely walk to their cars after yesterday's Maryland 3A/2A North Region final, said Jean Vanderpool, Centennial's assistant athletic director.
Vanderpool said she called 911 at approximately 5:30 p.m. as about 10 Fallston fans who stayed after their team's 8-7 loss to Centennial made derogatory comments to the game's referees. After the fans ignored her requests to disperse, Vanderpool said, she called police.
Three police officers arrived and ordered the crowd to disperse. No arrests were made, Vanderpool said.
Reached last night, Fallston Principal Robert Pfau said he was not aware of the incident and declined to comment.
