Reliever Rod Beck rejoined the Padres yesterday, more than two months after leaving the team to deal with an unspecified personal problem.

Beck left the team without having pitched in a spring training game. He started the season on the restricted list and has recently been pitching at extended spring training in Peoria, Ariz.

Beck did not reveal details of why he left the team.

"I had some really devastating things going on in my life where my mind wasn't on the game," Beck said. "Emotionally, I was sick."

* CAUTION, WET FLOOR: The Brewers placed IF Wes Helms on the 15-day DL after he tore cartilage in his right knee when he slipped on a wet runway leading from the clubhouse to the dugout at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

* PRIOR RECOVERING: One day after pitching in his first real game since last October, Cubs RHP Mark Prior was feeling a little sore. But it was a good kind of sore.

"I'm always stiff after I throw," he said. "It's always nice to get back out and be able to pitch."

* ODDS AND ENDS: The Red Sox placed RHP Scott Williamson on the 15-day DL with right elbow inflammation and recalled RHP Anastacio Martinez from Class AAA Pawtucket. . . . The club also signed 1B-DH David Ortiz to a two-year, $12.5 million contract extension that includes a club option for a third season.
