Sheryl Swoopes scored 29 points, and Tina Thompson added 19 to lead the visiting Houston Comets to a 60-53 victory over Charlotte in the Sting's season opener last night.
Swoopes and Thompson combined for all but 12 of Houston's as the Comets (1-1) bounced back from Thursday's season-opening loss to San Antonio.
Swoopes, limited to eight points on 4-of-13 shooting Thursday, scored eight straight points in a run that gave Houston a 38-32 lead with 11 minutes 38 seconds left.
"It's definitely good to come back and redeem yourselves after a tough loss," Swoopes said. "I didn't perform, and I knew I had to come out and be more mentally focused."
Thompson's three-pointer with 8:33 remaining gave the Comets their largest lead, 47-36.
Swoopes' fadeaway from the left baseline with 2:03 left ended the Sting's comeback hopes.
* FEVER 69, LIBERTY 67: Kelly Miller scored 18 points, and Natalie Williams finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds to lead Indiana at home. Kristen Rasmussen made two free throws with 10 seconds remaining to give the Fever a 69-64 lead before the Liberty's Crystal Robinson made a three-pointer at the buzzer.
