Thomas Stone right fielder Averill Butler's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Cougars past No. 7 Chesapeake, 2-1, in the Maryland 4A East Region baseball final yesterday in Waldorf.
The Cougars, who will meet Bowie in the state semifinals at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night at Prince George's Stadium, trailed 1-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. But Thomas Stone (16-8) finally solved Chesapeake starter Tom Shlein -- who had retired 15 batters in a row after giving up a two-out double in the first -- in the seventh.
Cougars senior catcher Aaron Jenkins led off with a single, then was sacrificed to second base. Jenkins moved to third on an infield single. Then pinch hitter Paul Vogt, was recently called up from the junior varsity team, lifted a fly ball to center field that scored Jenkins.
Chesapeake finished the season 20-3.
Hayfield Beats Robinson
Senior Andy Heard singled through the left side of the infield to score senior Jason Holsclaw and complete a 3-2, come-from-behind victory for Hayfield over Robinson in a Virginia AAA Patriot District baseball semifinal.
The Hawks had trailed 2-0 before scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs in the seventh, Hayfield freshman pinch hitter Josh Bender hit a two-strike double to right center field. Holsclaw came in to run for Bender, and scored on Heard's single.
Hayfield (15-4) will host Lake Braddock in Monday's district final. . . .
