Howard County school officials notified Oakland Mills Principal Marshall Peterson yesterday to begin looking for an athletic director and football coach to replace Ken Hovet, who is on unpaid leave with the recommendation that he be fired, said Don Disney, the county's coordinator of athletics.
Disney said the job will be posted inside the Columbia school for the next 10 days. If no qualified candidates are found, the coaching position can be filled by an "emergency coach," who will have the position for one year.
Meantime, Hovet, who declined to comment, could be reinstated by the board of education following his appeal hearing on June 11, in which a hearing officer will submit a non-binding recommendation to the school board.
Hovet was placed on unpaid leave on Jan. 12 by then-superintendent John O'Rourke after he determined Hovet had played a role in an improper grade change to a football player's transcript last fall.
