Stone Bridge senior Joel Chavez, batting ninth in the Bulldogs' lineup, blasted three hits, scored three times and drove in four runs in a 12-3 victory over visiting Loudoun Valley last night in the Virginia AA Dulles District championship baseball game.
The win was Stone Bridge's 15th in its last 16 games and its third consecutive this season over the second-seeded Vikings.
The Bulldogs (19-5) had nine hits in the win -- three each by Chavez and leadoff hitter Sean Ryan -- and also were helped by five errors by the Vikings (20-4).
"We probably put Joel in the starting lineup six or seven games ago," Stone Bridge Coach Sam Plank said. "We had been rotating first basemen, but he's really solidified that position. He's been phenomenal. When you get your number nine batter hitting shots off the wall, it makes it tough on any opponent."
Both teams qualified for the Region II tournament. Stone Bridge will host a quarterfinal at 7 p.m. Monday, and Loudoun Valley will travel to Turner Ashby.
