Severna Park sophomore attack Frank Taglienti had a career-high three goals and two assists as the 10th-ranked Severna Park boys' lacrosse team beat previously unbeaten Westminster, 13-11, to win the Maryland 4A/3A championship last night at UMBC.
The Falcons (16-4) had lost in the state final in three of the past four seasons -- all three times to Dulaney, which Severna Park beat, 10-9, in Saturday's semifinal.
"I sat in the stands and saw Severna Park lose in the state championship game the last two years and it made me want to be part of this team even more so it wouldn't happen again," said the 5-foot-5 Taglienti.
McLean Blanks Edison
McLean upended second-ranked Edison, 3-0, in a Virginia AAA Northern Region first-round boys' soccer game yesterday. Junior Mark Crawford scored two goals and goalkeeper Matt Barba recorded the shutout as the Highlanders earned a quarterfinal matchup against No. 1 West Springfield tonight.
In other first-round action, sophomore Jeff Sapolskym had two goals to lead W.T. Woodson to a 3-0 victory over Falls Church, and Jeremy Barlow scored twice in Langley's 4-1 win over Stuart. . . .
Park View senior Chris Jones converted a penalty kick and then saved one as the Patriots defeated No. 4 Broad Run in the Virginia AA Dulles District boys' soccer final last night in Ashburn.
Park View (12-4-1) and Broad Run (15-2-1) finished regulation and overtime tied at 1, and each team converted three of their first five penalty kicks. Jones then made his shot and save to give the Patriots the win.. . . .
In just10 minutes of play off the bench, Gar-Field freshman Cathy Becker scored two goals in a 3-1 girls' soccer victory over Woodbridge in the Virginia AAA Cardinal District semifinals.
