Red Sox SS Nomar Garciaparra, out all season because of a sore Achilles' tendon, is to begin a minor league rehabilitation assignment today.

Garciaparra plans to play two games with Class AAA Pawtucket at Louisville, then return to Boston to work with a therapist for a couple of days. He is expected to rejoin the farm team in Toledo after an off-day on Wednesday.

* MONDESI TO JOIN ANGELS: Anaheim finalized its contract with OF Raul Mondesi, who is scheduled to join the team for today's game in Chicago against the White Sox.

To make room for Mondesi on the 40-man roster, the Angels designated IF Adam Riggs for assignment. The Pirates terminated Mondesi's contract after he left them May 7 to return home to the Dominican Republic.

* NOMO DISABLED: Dodgers RHP Hideo Nomo has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a broken fingernail on his pitching hand.

* KARSAY, LEITER THROWING: Yankees RHP Steve Karsay threw two innings in an extended spring training game, his first such action since rotator cuff surgery a year ago. He might be able to rejoin the Yankees by mid-June. . . .

Mets LHP Al Leiter, out since May 11 with tendinitis in his left shoulder, threw 25 game-simulated pitches and could be back in the rotation by Tuesday.
