Yankees reliever Steve Karsay allowed one run over two innings in an extended spring training game yesterday, his second such action since rotator cuff surgery a year ago.

He allowed three hits and struck out one during his 34-pitch outing against Philadelphia minor leaguers. Karsay, who could rejoin the Yankees in mid to late June, is scheduled to begin a minor league rehabilitation assignment Friday with Class A Tampa.

"A step in the right direction," Karsay said. "Felt just as good as last time. We'll take it from here. The next step in the process is to pitch an inning in the Florida State League."

First baseman Jason Giambi, on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained ankle, took batting practice and participated in running drills for the second straight day at the Yankees' spring training complex. He still expects to be ready to be activated from the DL when eligible on Sunday.

"I'm right there," Giambi said. "Everything is going good."

Meantime, RHP Jason Anderson rejoined the organization when he was claimed off waivers from Cleveland.
